“Old Glory” Waves Proudly



All across this great nation, “Old Glory” waves proudly and majestically in freedom’s breeze. Patriots are celebrating the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence from England’s rule.

Since the Birthing of Our Nation, July 4th 1776, the world has forever been remarkably changed. It has become a vastly better place.

What shall we do to note this glorious event? How shall we commemorate this momentous day in our history?

What would the Founding Father’s have us to do, what would they recommend?

John Adams the second President of the United States, writing to his wife Abigail on July 3rd 1776 had this to offer;

“ I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever.”

About all John Adams didn’t figure in was the barbecue and picnic, beyond that, America’s followed his recommendations very well.

John knew there was a Revolutionary War that had to be won before there would be any celebrations. Freedom and liberty had to be secured and the outcome of the Revolution was far from certain.

What price was John Adams willing to pay for America’s freedom?

Again, listen to his words written on June 21st 1776

“If it be the pleasure of Heaven that my country shall require the poor offering of my life, the victim shall be ready, at the appointed hour of sacrifice, come when that hour may. But while I do live, let me have a country, and that a free country!


Let me offer another, slightly more familiar quotation, but one that reflects the attitude of our Founding Fathers, the Revolutionary Patriots.

“Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give death!”

Let me offer you a suggestion of how you might begin your July 4th celebrations. I join with John Adams, begin your day “by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.” Take the time to remember to thank God Almighty for this great nation, thank him for those Founding Fathers, those Patriots that laid it all on the line, that we might be free.

Then, head out to that parade, that family picnic, the fireworks, however you celebrate, enjoy your freedom.
